British Pop Duo Marshall Hain may have been one-hit wonders but in the summer of 1978 they were one of the coolest things going thanks to their worldwide hit “Dancing in The City”.
The song was supposedly originally written by written by Julian Marshall as a quasi-instrumental reggae song, but somewhere along the line the idea came to get a good looking woman to sing the vocals and clap from time to time. Somehow it worked and it reached No 3 in the UK and had considerable success almost everywhere else and still gets a fair amount of airplay to this day.
The video below has a pretty freaky eyeball opening but once you get past it the video is actually quite fun too with that hat and the clapping an all.
If you fancy a sing along the lyrics are below
If you’re a stranger here And you need some action
We have a remedy That could really catch on
Pleased to see another face At light — up time
If you’re feeling dull and run — down – We can really make you shine
Dancing in the city Alleys that we run through Now we’ve just begun to Have fun tonight
Dancing in the city Alleys that we run through Now we’ve just begun to Have fun tonight
Mmhh… Can you feel the darkness call Let the streets have their way They’ll carry you on ’til morning And steal your soul away
Dancing in the city Alleys that we run through Now we’ve just begun to Have fun tonight
Dancing in the city Alleys that we run through Now we’ve just begun to Have fun tonight
Dancing in the city Alleys that we run through Now we’ve just begun to Have fun tonight
Dancing in the city Alleys that we run through Now we’ve just begun to Have fun tonight
@TheHumbuckerboy Yes they were all fab records. 1978 was a great year for pop music.
I loved this era the sound the style the lot
@Davewise1965 Same here. Watching stuff like this on Youtube is like being in a time machine. I need escapism more than ever these days because the world today is absolutely crap. I go back to my childhood as often as I can.
@siasti the song that you mention (Hot Child in the City ) by nick Gilder never charted in the UK but I will check it out on Utube !
Oh God, I love and hate listening to this music- love it because it’s so brilliant, and hate it because it reminds me that I wasn’t around when this stuff was happening. I would do anything to be living through these years, anything at all. Damn you 1995!
They talk about genre differation now in music. I wonder if they include natural and unboosted as this is. as opposed to the crap of today. Just wondering?
@lostjohnny2 These sorts of revelations happen to me too. God bless YouTube: it’s an endless re-education for likes of us, old cock.
@sanger717 Thanks for your reply. The best music is from the 1950’s, 1960’s, and 1970’s. I agree that the School years were great fun. Todays music is rubbish.
@Davewise1965 I am agree with you i was in 1960 I’m 50 years and i remember those days like the best years of my life the scholl the girls the disco the dance thanks for sharing this kind of coments i’m Mexican but the music is universal regards
My teens and early 20s were spent in the 70s and I just love that era for its comparative innocence, But, I just love Ibiza dance music
I think that music was so much less pretencious then? it was all about fun and friviolity?
love this song marshall hain your an angel
@HaraldH62 meins auch
@sapper786 Music sure was good then.
@Davewise1965 Oh how right you are. Music was fantastic then. I was born 1962.
@20thCB But it’s true pal….get over that!
I agree the 70’s were the best decade,a far cry from the thrash we have today.
Good grief – I’ve liked this for 33 years and only now do I find out that Marshall Hain is (are?) two people,
@crocfme mmm yep and stopped striking!
I cant’ imagine the youth today having wonderful memories backed up by: Beiber, Gaga, 2 Pac & Co. At least we had what was music and not gang related, synthasized made to sell garble.
How beautiful is she without really trying.
@TheHumbuckerboy Don’t forget “Hot Child in the City” by Nick Gilder.
‘Run For Home ‘by Lindisfarne ,’Airport’ by Motors ,’Substitute’ by Clout ,’5705′ by City Boy and this marvellous song by Marshall Hain all bring back wonderful childhood memories of a particular summer holiday in The Isle Of Man.The summer of ’78 was a brilliant time for chart music !
@crocfme top stuff i totally agree yer
Memories of Shuffles in Glasgow,
Brilliant
