Don McLean – American Pie

Don McLean singing American Pie is for many (who are old enough to remember it) one of the enduring memories from the early 1970s. This classic folk-rock single was taken from the 1971 American Pie album and the single reached no 1 in the USA, where it stayed for four weeks in 1972. It faired a little less well in the UK, reaching number two when originally released, however this was quite an achievement for a Folk song, given the then competitive nature of the music charts in the UK, It was re-released in 1991 and reached no 12 on that occasion. The video below is a live version.

  1. One of the best, most lasting songs ever written. Everyone in Europe knows it.

  2. This song belongs to the world, not just to America. It’s very possible that even those who don’t like America like this song.

This song is actually fairly complicated in it’s chord progression, which is basically a chord change every word. You don’t see that any more, it’s all four chord songs. Makes me appreciate this even more.

This is the best version there is. I always liked it so much better when he did it solo and sang it like this. The late 70’s to now kinda killed the song for me, so I only listen to the lp version and this live one

  12. awesomely cool
